It just so happens that the day I decided to start this blog, I ran into a really awesome UI mockup tool called Balsamiq. It looks extremely promising.

On the website, the author shows several mockups of current interfaces, including iTunes and YouTube. All of these interfaces where mockedup using the standard widgets provided by Balsamiq. I think one of my favorite aspects of it is the fact that everything appears hand drawn. It gives the mockups that rough edge look of a hand drawing with the convenience of a computer designed one.
I did a little testing of my own and found the tool to be pretty robust. I was able to put together a few semi-complicated mockups in only a few minutes. One thing I didn't like was the price tag. It's about $80, which I know is cheap relative to some software but I'm used to open source (free as in free beer). I'm not sure if there is a comparable mockup tool available in the open source world, but Balsamiq seems like it's worth the price.
